Tallgrass Literacy Initiative
STRUCTURED LITERACY. JOYFUL READING.
Who We Are
Our Mission
At Tallgrass Literacy Initiative, we believe every child deserves to learn to read—and to love reading.
We are proudly aligned with the Science of Reading, delivering explicit, systematic instruction that builds real, lasting skills.
But we don’t stop there.
We create spaces where books are more than assignments—
They are adventure, comfort, curiosity, and connection.
Because reading isn’t just something you learn.
It’s something you carry with you for life.
Our Approach
We do both—intentionally.
✔️ Explicit, systematic instruction grounded in the Science of Reading
✔️ Phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, and language development
✔️ Rich read-alouds and meaningful book experiences
✔️ Opportunities for choice, curiosity, and connection
Because decoding is essential—
But joy is what makes reading stick.
Why It Matters
In many rural communities, access to high-quality literacy support is limited.
Tallgrass exists to change that.
We bring structured literacy instruction directly into the places children already are—
childcare centers, community spaces, and local partnerships.
And we make sure every child experiences reading not just as a skill…
but as a source of confidence, imagination, and possibility.
Call to Action
Join us in growing readers.
Whether you’re a parent, childcare provider, or community partner—
There’s a place for you in this work.
Community Collaboration
Tallgrass Literacy Initiative is being developed with guidance from local educators, childcare providers, and community members who share a commitment to strengthening early literacy opportunities for children in rural Iowa.
Founder
Tallgrass Literacy Initiative was founded by Melissa Lammers, a licensed Iowa educator and dyslexia specialist with extensive experience in literacy instruction and assessment.
Through her work with students and childcare providers in the region, Melissa has seen firsthand the importance of early language development and access to high-quality literacy experiences before children begin formal schooling.
Tallgrass Literacy Initiative was established to help bring these opportunities directly into community childcare settings and support young learners during the critical early years of literacy development.
